Common questions

Salt therapy aka halotherapy is a holistic treatment which takes place under simulated conditions of a natural salt cave. It is a natural and drugless therapy to relieve symptoms of respiratory and skin conditions. Dry microscopic salt particles when inhaled access the deepest area of the respiratory tract to cleanse your lungs of pathogens, smoke residues and pollutants. The therapy also enhances your child’s immunity and improves endurance.

A device releases the required percentage of dry salt aerosol into an enclosed room depending upon the condition. The walls and floor of the treatment room is additionally coated with salt layers to provide a complete sterile environment for healing. The room is enriched with salt particles ranging from 0-5 microns. Particles larger than 5 micrometres are caught in the nose and throat, while the smaller particles penetrate deep into the lungs.

Salt being anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial reduces swelling, gives relief from congestion, inflammation and allergies. It loosens the phlegm and mucous which is expelled from the body through the nose and mouth. The particles that reach the deepest part of the lungs cleanses the airways and slows down bacterial growth.

Skin conditions that cause itchiness, dryness, rashes or flaking are relieved due to the micro-circulation effect of the salt particles. IgE level (measure of antibodies) which is high in allergic conditions is lowered making the skin less reactive.

The salt aerosol carries a negative electric charge that stimulates the respiratory and skin system. These negative ions reduce stress, headaches, depression and improve energy levels, metabolism and sleep patterns.

Research has shown that halotherapy gives positive relief for respiratory and skin conditions without any negative impact. Dr. A.V. Chervinsltaya, the head of Clinical Research Respiratory Center in St. Petersburg, Russia, has conducted most of the research on halotherapy and has published more than two hundred articles.

During one of the clinical trials, salt therapy resulted in improvement of the clinical state in:

  • 85% of mild and moderate asthma cases.
  • 75% of severe asthma cases.
  • 97% of chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis and cystic fibrosis cases.
  • 88% of smokers of the target group by the end of inhalation course reported easier and/or decreased cough, changes in the character of sputum, which became lighter and clearer.

(“Journal of Aerosol Medicine, A.V. Chervinskaya, Volume 8, Number 3, 1995”).

In Kimmo Saarinen, PhD (Finland’s South Karelia Allergy and Environment Institute) study, asthma patients reported fewer symptoms after inhaling salty air for 40 minutes a day for about two weeks. The average person enjoyed a roughly 34% drop in asthma symptoms.

Based on the results, the NHS took up the treatment charges for clients with COPD using ‘The Salt Cave’s technology.
